Chapter Six

Repeating the careful steps he took to get to the site, Zen made his way to his truck, thinking back to his time in the military. Thanks to his training, he could fall asleep when needed and could do so anywhere, and even though the night was still early, he was confident he’d meet Mr. Sandman the moment he went horizontal.

He opened the front and rear door, then unrolled the sleeping bag on the bench seat. A little extra cushion was never a bad idea. In fact, his truck happened to be five-star accommodations compared to some of the places he had slept while out on missions. Zen climbed into the truck, managed to shut both doors, enclosing himself in the cab, and lay supine on the seat. As he did every night, Zen closed his eyes and said a little prayer to have a dreamless slumber.

Except Mr. Sandman was a crafty fellow. Upon his arrival, Sandy did a Pandora move and opened the black boxes Zen had put to one side earlier, letting out all the bad memories… all the demons that were more than happy to fuck up his mind.

He tossed and turned as the worst time of his life being replayed in the form of a nightmare took hold. Again.
